Protecting Our Elders: A Conversation With Ted Cook

Hello everyone, and welcome! Today I’m delighted to be chatting with Ted Cook, an elder protection attorney here in sunny San Diego.

What Inspired You To Focus On Elder Protection?

Ted, what drew you to this particular field of law? It seems like a really important and challenging area to work in.

“I’ve always been passionate about social justice,” Ted explains. “And elder protection felt like a natural fit. Our seniors are often vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and I believe it’s crucial to advocate for their rights and well-being.”

Let’s Dive Deeper Into ‘Protective Actions’

Ted, can you elaborate on the “Protective Actions” stage? This seems like a critical point where immediate steps are taken to safeguard an elder.

“You’re right, it is crucial,” Ted nods. “During this phase, we focus on mitigating immediate threats and ensuring the elder’s safety. This can involve several actions depending on the specific situation. Sometimes, it’s as straightforward as getting a restraining order against an abuser. Other times, it might require filing for guardianship or conservatorship to protect an individual who lacks the capacity to make sound decisions for themselves.”

“We also work closely with Adult Protective Services (APS) and law enforcement when necessary. Our goal is always to create a safe and stable environment for the elder while we pursue legal remedies.”

“Ted Cook helped my mother navigate a truly difficult situation. He was compassionate, knowledgeable, and fiercely dedicated to protecting her interests.” – Maria S., La Jolla, CA

Ted, have you encountered any particular challenges or roadblocks during this stage?

“After my father’s passing, we discovered financial irregularities. Ted was instrumental in uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable.” – John B., Point Loma, CA

“There have been times,” Ted admits, “when convincing family members of the need for intervention has been tough. Sometimes, there’s denial or a reluctance to acknowledge that abuse is happening. In those cases, we rely on clear evidence and the elder’s own wishes to guide our actions.”

“I highly recommend Point Loma Estate Planning APC. Ted’s expertise and dedication gave me peace of mind knowing my grandmother was in good hands.” – Sarah L., Mission Beach, CA

Ted, is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about elder protection or the work you do?

“If you suspect an elderly individual is being abused or exploited, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help and make sure our seniors are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
